accurately dating the pregnancy: the crown-rump length is measured for dating the pregnancy and calculating the estimated due date (EDD);
to diagnose multiple pregnancy: ultrasound can determine the number of fetuses and type of twin pregnancy, which will dictate how often the pregnancy will be monitored;
to diagnose fetal abnormalities: major fetal abnormalities can be seen at this early gestation. However, an anomaly scan in the second trimester is still necessary;
to diagnose early miscarriage: unfortunately, in some cases, the pregnancy stops developing a few weeks prior to the NT scan without any sign or symptom (missed miscarriage) In these cases the couple will receive full counselling about possible causes and management, always in agreement with the private doctor.;
to calculate the risk* for chromosomal abnormalities like Down Syndrome: each woman will be given her individual risk for this pregnancy. The risk is calculated based on the NT measurement, nasal bone assessment and blood flow through the tricuspid valve and Ductus Venosus. Parents will receive extensive counselling concerning the significance of these risks and options f further investigation when needed (NIPT or Invasive Diagnostic Test).
* The doctor preforming the scan must be certified by the Fetal Medicine Foundation.
